Via Smut’s SE face. An excellent Kananaskis spring ski.
Park along the Smith Dorrien across from Mount Smuts, approximately 5km north of the Burstall/Chester parking lots.
The route begins up Commonwealth Creek. Get an early start as Smut’s SE face receives a lot of intense sun. Head towards large slide path coming off of Smut’s SE face and boot-pack up directly towards the summit ridge.
Starting the boot-pack above. Avalanche debris on the lower half of the face made ascending somewhat tedious. These lower slopes are approximately 35 degrees steep.
Better boot-packing conditions midway up at first light. These slopes are approximately 45 degrees steep.
Nearly topping out. Upper slopes towards the summit ridge reached the low-50s in steepness.
Topping out on the summit ridge. A short scramble to the true summit can be done if you wish. We waited on the ridge until 8:45am for the snow to soften up (April 9).
Great, steep corn skiing on the upper slopes!
To avoid the avalanche debris, we trended skier’s right after each cliff band. Arrow above marks a good route around the debris on the lower slopes.
GPS route above in blue. Route finding is straight forward.
Times and distances are round trip, and include a 30 minute wait at the summit ridge for snow to soften up. Back in Canmore in time for breakfast!
